Cancer patient died after solvent therapy

    * Debbie Guest
    * From: The Australian

A DISCREDITED Austrian doctor behind a bizarre therapy claimed the tumour cells of one of his patients were disappearing days before the woman died.

In an email to a nurse administering his therapy in Perth, banned Thailand-based doctor Hellfried Sartori said a lot of the tumour cells of breast cancer patient Deborah Gruber were dying, and directed the nurse to inject the 42-year-old with the industrial solvent DMSO.

Days later Gruber, who had travelled from New York for the supposed cancer cure, began vomiting green fluid and was eventually admitted to hospital, where she died from an infection of the bloodstream.

Juli 2006:

AN AUSTRALIAN woman is believed to be among the victims of a deregistered doctor accused of peddling fake cures for cancer and AIDS in Thailand.

Hellfried Sartori, 67, is being held on charges of fraud and practising medicine without a licence in the northern city of Chiang Mai.

Police allege that several ill foreigners travelled to Thailand with false hopes for his cures, only to die after receiving injections of a dangerous chemical compound bought for $A50,000 from Sartori.

Bangkok's Nation yesterday reported that one Australian cancer patient, Kathleen Preston, had died in a Thai hospital last July. An autopsy report found an excessive amount of potassium in her blood, the report stated.

Ms Preston's death is being investigated by the Northern Territory Coroner, a spokeswoman, Lorelei Fong Lim, said. "The NT Coroner's office is investigating the death of NT resident Kathleen Preston," she said. "It would be inappropriate to speculate or pre-empt any outcome of the investigation."

In Canberra, Australian Federal Police said they had passed on information from police in Western Australia and the Northern Territory regarding Sartori's arrest. A spokesman denied a report the AFP would be seeking to extradite Sartori to face charges. Northern Territory police and Western Australian police both declined to comment.

Thai police said Sartori's internet advertisements offered desperate people all over the world the false prospect of a cure for "everything from AIDS and cancer to allergies and hardening of the arteries".

His patients had "consultations" carried out in various hotel rooms in Chiang Mai. Several had died in hospitals in Chiang Mai, according to Thai police.

Chiang Mai detectives said Sartori, who studied medicine in his native Austria, had been convicted in the US of illegally administering his so-called "ozone treatments", and had been jailed in New York State in May 1992 and Washington in July 1998.

Professor Bruce Armstrong, the director of research at the Sydney Cancer Centre at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, dismissed the cancer treatments offered by Sartori.

"Neither ozone treatments nor cesium chloride have any evidence based behind them for being effective as cancer therapies," he said.

Sartori had been stripped of his medical licence in several US states, police said.

It was not clear yesterday when he would appear in court or if he would face more charges. The investigation is widening following reports he had links with cancer treatment groups in Perth and Darwin.

New Zealand police also joined the investigation after a national, named as Melissa Judith Taylor in Nation, was admitted unconscious to intensive care at Chiang Mai Hospital.

Hospital officials said yesterday the woman had recovered sufficiently to return home.

Cancer Clinic - Dr. Abdul-Haqq Sartori, M.D. (Thailand)

Note: Dr. Sartori has been put in jail in Tailand and will soon be tried for murder in Australia (as of July 17, 2006). An orthodox medical doctor can murder 93% of their cancer patients and be immune from prosecution. An alternative doctor can CURE 50% of their cancer patients, and be thrown in jail for murder. Such is the corruption brought about by the long arm of the pharmaceutical industry and corrupt politians, who together are willing to sell their souls for every drop of blood, and every dollar, they can squeeze out of cancer patients. It is highly unlikely Dr. Sartori will ever treat another cancer patient. If anyone pretends to be Dr. Sartori, please let Cancer Tutor know (see bottom of home page for email address.)

Cancer Clinic - Dr. Abdul-Haqq Sartori, M.D. (Thailand)

This treatment is very expensive, it is very, very intense, and it requires an enormous amount of travel. This clinic is not for everyone.

Dr. Sartori was raised and educated in Austria, but did obtain a great deal of training in the United States. He is very well known among alternative cancer authorities for his magnificant study using cesium chloride on highly advanced cancer patients:

"Dr. H. E. Sartori began his cesium cancer therapy program in April 1981 at Life Sciences Universal Medical Clinics in Rockville, Md. Fifty patients with widespread metastatic tumor deposits were treated. Forty-seven of these 50 patients had already completed maximal modalities of treatment, i.e. surgery, radiation, multiple courses of chemotherapy before cesium was tried. Their condition was hopeless.

Cesium chloride was given in 3 equal divided doses of 6 to 9 grams daily. Supplemental vitamin A emulsion (100,000 to 300,000 U), vitamin C (4 to 30 grams), zinc (80 to 100 mg., selenium (600 to 1200 mg.), and amygadalin (1500 mg.) were given plus other supplements. The diet consisted primarily of whole grains, vegetables, linolenic acid rich foods (flaxseed, walnut, soy, wheat germ) and other supplemented food. EDTA (chelation, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and a combination of vitamins K, and magnesium salts were also given. The types of malignancies treated included 10 patients with breast cancer, 9 with colon cancer, 6 with prostate cancer, 4 had pancreatic cancer, 5 had lung cancer, 3 had liver cancer (hepatoma), 3 had lymphoma, 1 had Ewing's sarcoma of the pelvis, 1 had an adenocarcinoma and 8 had cancer from an unknown site of origin.

Approximately 50 % of patients with breast, colon, prostate, pancreas and lung cancer survived. Three patients were comatose when the therapy was initiated. Thirteen patients died in the first 2 weeks of therapy. Autopsy results in each of these 13 disclosed reduction in tumor mass size caused by cesium therapy. Also pain disappeared in all patients within 1 to 3 days after initiation of cesium therapy. This may have reflected decreased production of lactic acid by dying cancer cells ..."

By Dr. James Howenstine, MD., June 29, 2004

Dr. Sartori currently practices in Thailand and other countries. In July, 2005 he will open a clinic in England.

The following story, and related issues, explain the main reason why he left the United States:

"... on 2 May 1992, U.S Government Agents simultaneously broke into three locations where the originals and two copies of some 3000 patient records treated by LSU [a medical center, not the university] from 1980 through 1992, including about 650 cancer patients, about 180 AIDS patients, about 80 multiple sclerosis patients, and over 2000 patients with different conditions that were the data basis for the 2d ed. of the Ozone Book that for reasons beyond the control of the authors took until the year 2005 to be finally completed."
Dr. Sartori's literature

I quote from Dr. Sartori's current literature regarding his cancer treatment:

"(1) High-dose direct I.V. ozone: while there were about 6,000 practitioners in Germany & about 10,000 worldwide in 1955 who used high-dose direct I.V. ozone, to the best of my knowledge, I am presently the only practitioner in the world who uses this modality as BASIS THERAPY for all conditions to homeopathically reverse ALL DISEASE TENDENCIES. Note that I described this homeopathic effect of ozone in 1980, but it has been ignored by all practitioners ever since. The results of over 10,000 patients treated with this modality are reflected, in part, in my book, OZONE, the Eternal Purifier ..., especially in the forthcoming 2d ed. Over 200 Internet sites draw on the ozone effects described in the 1st edition.

(2) I.V. application of the high pH therapy: while there were a few practitioners, including Dr Hans Nieper & Dr Jonathan Wright, who used the oral form in some of their patients, I am the only one who consistently used it I.V. as it is 1.5 to 3.0 times more consistently effective. Of some 750 patients with cancer, over 500 were treated with the I.V. application. A fraction of the actual results are discussed in Now that you have learned that you have TERMINAL/INCURABLE CANCER, & this exposé is a small fraction of the forthcoming entirely new comprehensive book on the state-of-the-art of alternative /complementary cancer treatments, CANCER? You Can Turn it into a New Lease on Life.

(3) Separation of ozone, minerals, & vitamins (eventually followed by hyperbaric oxygen) to minimize any adverse reactions that are common if vitamins & minerals are combined in the same I.V."
Dr. Sartori's literature

Dr. Sartori also treats a number of other diseases, including Alzheimers, atherosclerosis (both using a type of chelation), an enhanced version of Dr. Nieper protocols for multiple sclerosis (MS) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), proven effective since the 1950s, pulmonary sarcoidosis, lung diseases including emphysema, hepatitis, vaginal yeast infections and virtually all other infectious diseases, AIDS and other immune system disorders.

To say that Dr. Sartori may be the world's foremost expert on cesium chloride treatments, which he has refined for over 25 years, may be a great understatement. He has demonstrated that cesium chloride and ozone, both given by I.V., are highly synergistic. He is also the author of a book on ozone.

The cost of his treatment will range from between $15,000 and $20,000, or more, plus travel expenses.

Leichen pflastern ihren Weg.

What's the harm in ozone therapy?

Ozone or oxygenation therapy is based on a non-scientific theory that oxygen content in tissue is key to disease. It uses ozone or hydrogen peroxide as an alleged treatment.

Quacks prey on dying

TORY SHEPHERD, HEALTH REPORTER From:The Advertiser November 11,
2007 11:30 PM

THREE South Australians have died after paying thousands of dollars for "miracle cures" for cancer.

(AdelaideNow would like to hear from anyone who has been offered so-called miricle cures. Scroll down and tell us about your experiences in the comment box provided.)

In one case, a young woman with pancreatic cancer died two months after receiving a controversial treatment called "ozone therapy".

Her mother was concerned the treatment had made her condition worse.

The Health and Community Services Complaints Commissioner's annual report says all three died without any benefit from the treatments and no refunds were paid to the families.

Commissioner Leena Sudano said authorities were powerless to prevent vulnerable people being exploited.

"We can never stamp this out," she said.

"People can change their names, their shopfronts and . . . there will always be people who, when presented with their own mortality, will give anything a chance. Quacks will always exist."

The cases include:

A WOMAN, aged under 30, who paid about $3000 for "ozone therapy" which involves the injection of the chemical caesium chloride. It was administered to "treat" pancreatic cancer. She died two months later.

A MAN, 52, with prostate cancer who paid $3500 to an unregistered provider for alternative therapies. He died during the course of that treatment.

A MAN, 66, paid up to $24,000 for a range of blood tests and herbal remedies. He died three months later.

The deaths occurred in late 2005 and 2006.

In at least one case the victim's family was concerned the treatment had hastened the death and that the victims had been encouraged to give up their orthodox treatment.

Ms Sudano's powers are restricted to fining bogus practitioners, but she is hoping those powers will be extended so she does not appear a "toothless tiger".

A parliamentary inquiry by the Social Development Committee will investigate "bogus, unregistered and deregistered health practitioners" in SA.

The investigation is chaired by Labor MP Trish White, who wants to protect people from the peddlers of false hope.

"The fact is we don't know how widespread these dodgy practices are in SA, and the first step in being able to crack down on them is to assess how large the problem is," Ms White said.

"Our committee will be reporting to Parliament on the size of the problem and suggesting a course of action.

"We will be looking at the laws and how adequate they are."

Ms Sudano is hoping to be able to name and shame the dodgy practitioners before Christmas, and in the meantime she warns people to be aware of possible frauds.

"(About) 40 per cent of cancer sufferers will use alternative therapies," she said, adding that people should ensure practitioners are registered or belong to peak organisations.

Australian Medical Association state president Peter Ford said fraudulent cures had been around "since medicines were dispensed from coloured wagons".

He said people needed to ensure any treatments offered were evidence-based.

"We can only ask people to really discuss offers with their doctors and perhaps get a second medical opinion," he said.

"They should be very cautious of stepping outside the conventional medical system . . ."

The Cancer Council of SA only supports treatments that have been scientifically proven to be safe and effective. "There is evidence that some complementary therapies such as acupuncture and massage, when used together with proven treatments, can relieve symptoms or side-effects and improve wellbeing. But they won't cure cancer," chief executive Associate Professor Brenda Wilson said.

"We do not advocate complementary or alternative therapies to replace scientifically proven treatments."

People wanting to know more about alternative therapies should visit the Cancer Council's website on http://www.cancersa.org.au or call them on 13 11 20.

Anyone who has experienced bogus treatment should contact the HCSCC at www.hcscc.sa.gov.au or make a submission to the parliamentary inquiry.

Submissions should be posted to the Social Development Committee, care of Parliament House, North Terrace, Adelaide, SA 5000.

WARUM!? Warum können die Behörden angeblich nichts tun?

HEADLINE: Rockville Doctor Is Arrested in 'Cancer Cure' Case
BYLINE: By Eugene L. Meyer, Washington Post Staff Writer

BODY: A Maryland doctor was arrested in his District of Columbia office yesterday for distributing a drug he allegedly claimed offers a cure for cancer but which has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The arrest of Dr. Hellfried E. Sartori, 43, of Rockville by postal inspectors followed his secret indictment May 25 by a federal grand jury in Baltimore on charges of mail fraud, making a false statement and distributing the industrial chemical cesium chloride to three cancer patients with intent to defraud and mislead.

According to the indictment, Sartori dispensed the drug to three patients at his Rockville office at 4808 Macon Rd. in June and July of 1981. Two have since died. The third paid more than $2,000 to Sartori and was allegedly assured by him of Medicare reimbursement, which was denied.

A Fairfax County judge yesterday set bail at $250,000 for a former physician charged with practicing medicine without a license after allegedly injecting a Washington man with ozone.

Hellfried Eric Sartori, 59, who worked at the LifeQuest America clinic in Annandale, was arrested Friday after his patient, who has not been identified by police, suffered a heart attack and stroke following the ozone injections, police said. The 56-year-old patient was hospitalized, and authorities said he was expected to survive.

Sartori's attorney, Glen Franklin Koontz, said he would appeal to reduce the bail set by Circuit Court Judge Robert J. Smith. Koontz said that practicing …

Thomas P. McBride thought Hellfried Eric Sartori was "a very prominent doctor" who might have the long-sought cure for his emphysema, McBride told a Fairfax County judge yesterday.

But McBride said he knew something was wrong with Sartori's treatments almost immediately. While he was getting a series of eight injections at Sartori's Annandale clinic on July 13, the 56-year-old District man testified, he began sweating profusely, lost feeling in his left leg and started gasping for air.

McBride suffered a heart attack that day after being injected with ozone, according to Fairfax police, who have charged Sartori with practicing medicine without a license.

A former physician who injected ozone into the bloodstreams of his patients -- including one who later suffered a heart attack and another who had a stroke -- was convicted yesterday in Fairfax County Circuit Court of practicing medicine without a valid license.

Hellfried Eric Sartori, 59, an Austrian citizen who has lost his license to practice medicine in 14 states, sat expressionless and looked down at his hands as the jury announced the decision and recommended that he spend five years in prison.

The jury could have recommended up to 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine, and relatives of at least one patient said they were disappointed with the decision. "He …

Although his attorney maintained that former physician Hellfried E. Sartori did nothing medically wrong by injecting his clients with ozone, a Fairfax County judge yesterday sentenced Sartori to five years in prison for practicing medicine without a license.

A jury convicted Sartori, 59, in October and recommended two terms of 2 1/2 years each for the two victims who claimed Sartori's treatment only plunged them into further health problems. Sartori did not testify during his three-day trial, and he did not make a statement yesterday before being sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Dennis J. Smith. It is known that four women, who were among the six, had undergone a controversial
cesium chloride therapy at a clinic in the western Perth suburb of Mosman Park.

All four died suddenly within a month of each other last year.

Article: Woman tells of 'ozone' terror; Cell damage 'would outweigh benefits'
Article from:The Press
Article date:July 13, 2006
Author:THOMAS, Kim

A woman's desperate search for a terminal-cancer cure turned into a terrifying fight for her life after undergoing controversial "ozone therapy" in Thailand.

Christchurch mother-of-two Melissa Taylor suffered a stroke and was unconscious for three days in a Chiang Mai hospital after being injected with ozone gas by Austrian Hellfried Sartori.

He has since been arrested for fraud and practising medicine without a licence.

Despite the experience, Taylor says neither she nor her family bears the bogus doctor malice.

"We heard that he had a cure for cancer," she said at her Christchurch home yesterday.

"We were clutching at straws, yes, but he did send …

Article: UPDATE: Former Va. Doctor Arrested Again -- in Thailand
Article from:The Washington Post
Article date:August 27, 2006

Former Virginia doctor Hellfried E. Sartori, 67, who was imprisoned for treating patients with questionable remedies, was arrested last month in Thailand, accused of doing something similar.

When Sartori was last seen in the United States, he was headed to prison in Virginia to serve five years for practicing medicine without a license. Fairfax County prosecuted him after he was found to have injected seriously ill people with ozone at a clinic in Annandale. It's a controversial treatment, but with some proponents, and a Fairfax judge told him that "if it is a proper treatment, it's to be administered by a doctor."

Sartori was released from prison in February 2003, …

Article: Planting gardens for breast cancer patients
Article from:The Boston Globe (Boston, MA)
Article date:May 10, 2009
Author:Cindy Cantrell

HOPE IN BLOOM: Roberta Dehman Hershon remembers everything about her best friend, Beverly Eisenberg, who succumbed to breast cancer in August 2005.

They met as youngsters, when Hershon saw Eisenberg jumping rope with another friend in their hometown of Sharon. They were inseparable into adulthood, and when Eisenberg fell ill in 2004, Hershon sought to comfort her through the passion they shared for gardening.

"I'm a fix-it person, but I couldn't make her disease better. What I could do was make sure she always had fresh flowers in her house and make her garden look great in the spring," said Hershon, who established Hope in Bloom in 2007 to plant "healing gardens" at the …

International Investigation Into Pseudo Treatment For Cancer Patients in Thailand

Richard S. Ehrlich - 8/14/2006

BANGKOK, Thailand. Hellfried E. Sartori, whose medical license was revoked in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington state, has been jailed in Thailand during an international investigation into the death of patients who received his "Doctor Ozone" anti-cancer injections. Sartori was arrested on July 9 in Chiang Mai and charged with commercial fraud, and practicing without a medical license, after injecting at least two patients in their Chiang Mai hotel rooms, including Australian ovarian cancer patient Kathleen Preston who died in February.

"That poor woman bled to death because of the incompetence of the staff at that [Maharaj Nakorn] hospital," Sartori said, referring to the Chiang Mai facility where Mrs. Preston, 58, was taken when she became ill after Sartori's treatment. A post-mortem revealed a high potassium content in her blood -- an element linked to Sartori's treatment. "I have not committed any crime," Sartori, 67, told an Australian journalist during a jailhouse interview in July in Chiang Mai, Thailand's second largest city and a popular tourist destination in the north. "All I did was to try to help people after they approached me," said Sartori, an Austrian citizen.

Melissa Judith Taylor, from New Zealand, fell unconscious last month in Chiang Mai after Sartori injected a liquid into the veins in her chest and neck, to treat her lung cancer. When Ms. Taylor recovered from her treatment in Chiang Mai Ram Hospital in July, she told police that she learned about Sartori through a Web site, and had flown to Chiang Mai so he could cure her. Sartori was dubbed "Dr. Ozone" by the media because he allegedly injected a concoction he called "liquid ozone" into cancer victims. Sartori insisted he was only a "technician" who supervised unidentified "nurses" who plunged the needles.

He billed patients about 22,000 U.S. dollars for his injections in Chiang Mai. Sartori's supporters on Web sites claimed the Native American Hopi tribe in Arizona, and northern Pakistan's residents in mountainous Hunza, enjoy low cancer rates because their diets are rich in potassium, plus either rubidium or cesium, which are highly alkaline. Sartori insisted cesium - a rare chemical element of alkali metal - could kill cancer.

Ingesting cesium chloride, or cesium carbonate, puts cancer cells in a high alkaline environment deadly to cancer, which thrives in an acidic environment, Sartori and his supporters claimed. In Australia, police linked Sartori and a physician in Perth, Dr. Alexandra Boyd, to the deaths of six terminally ill people, including a New Yorker, who allegedly received cesium chloride therapy in Perth in May 2005. Dr. Boyd said she had not performed "any cancer treatment to these Perth-based patients of Mr. Sartori," and merely conducted blood tests.

Sartori reportedly began his cesium cancer therapy in 1981 at Life Sciences Universal Medical Clinics in Rockville, Maryland, where he treated at least 50 patients. At least 25 of them reportedly died. Sartori's supporters boasted on Web sites that the results were a success because the 25 who survived were brought back from terminal cancer. Sartori's medical license was revoked in Maryland state in 1984 due to professional incompetence, and also in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington state the following year.

Sartori received his first U.S. medical license in 1977 from the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, according to the board's medical examiner Joel D. Holliday who revoked it in 1987. "Sartori was convicted of practicing medicine without a license after injecting ozone into patients intravenously, and performing chelation therapy via injection of ethyl-enediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), to treat various diseases," according to the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.

"The American Cancer Society now notes on its Web site that CsCl [cesium chloride] can cause arrhythmia and/or death," the Mayo Foundation said. The arrest of Sartori, who also used the name Abdul-Haddaq Sartori, came after Australian Federal Police arrived in Chiang Mai in November. Australian police asked Thai police to investigate why Australians were dying after being treated by Sartori, who was then operating in Chiang Mai and through a Web site, according to Thai police. West Australian Detective-Sergeant Terry Rakich said his interviews with Sartori, which began on July 28, were to determine Sartori's role the cesium chloride treatments given to cancer patients in Perth last year, according to the West Australian newspaper.

Richard S Ehrlich is a Bangkok-based journalist who has reported news from Asia since 1978 and is co-author of "Hello My Big Big Honey!", a non-fiction book of investigative journalism. He received Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism's Foreign Correspondents Award.

Le docteur tueur sous les verrous

Bangkok, 23/08/06

« Reply #6 on: November 07, 2010, 01:59:34 AM »

Reporter: Liz Hayes
Producers: Phil Goyen, Kirsty Thomson

It's hard to comprehend how anyone could be so greedy or so cruel.

Dr Hellfried Sartori claims he can cure terminal cancer.

It isn't true, of course.

But what makes Dr Sartori's scam truly despicable is that he doesn't just empty out his victims' bank accounts.

The last days of life are painful hell for his patients, as they're dosed up on powerful chemicals that poison their systems.

His treatment has already failed to save 24 Australians; and yet it seems nothing can be done to stop him.

Full transcript:

LIZ HAYES: He was the doctor of last resort. The doctor who promised Australian cancer patients a miracle. How do you feel about Dr Sartori?

RENAE: He’s a madman, an absolute madman.

LIZ HAYES: But Dr Hellfried Sartori’s alternative cancer treatment saved no one.

GERARD: Absolutely horrible to think that we’d taken Sandra on this journey of hope and that it turned out that there was probably never any real hope there at all.

LIZ HAYES: Those hopes were shattered over two horrendous weeks, behind the closed doors of this suburban Perth home that would end with the deaths of five people and spark a coronial inquest into Dr Sartori and his treatment. You are preying on incredibly ill people who are desperately looking for something and you haven’t been able to give them anything. You gave them death – That’s true.

HELLFRIED: I said…Well anyway, I believe…

LIZ HAYES: For nearly 30 years, Dr Sartori, an Austrian trained GP, has pushed the benefits of his cesium treatment for cancer patients. Patients were charged up to $40,000 for his chemical cocktail which includes cesium chloride, ozone, laetrile – also known as B17 – and an industrial solvent called DMSO, all prohibited substances in Australia without medical exemptions. Don’t you tell them you can cure it?

HELLFRIED: No, I don’t ever use the word ‘cure.’

LIZ HAYES: ‘Recover’?

HELLFRIED: Well…

LIZ HAYES: ‘Completely’? If you don’t use the word ‘cure,’ ‘recover,’ ‘100% recovery,’ ‘permanent recovery’ – don’t you use those words?

HELLFRIED: “Recovery from the present condition,” yes.

LIZ HAYES: How many patients have been ‘cured’ by your treatments?

HELLFRIED: Um, I really cannot say.

LIZ HAYES: You say 10,000…

HELLFRIED: Yeah, it’s my best estimate.

LIZ HAYES: I’ve not seen one.

HELLFRIED: Yeah they are…no, no.

LIZ HAYES: And if those thousand patients say “that treatment’s fantastic, it saved my life,” why aren’t they coming forward?

HELLFRIED: Yeah, they’re telling people in the underground.

LIZ HAYES: It’s just not true and you know it.

HELLFRIED: Ok, well…

LIZ HAYES: It was that promise of a cure that drew 69-year-old Pia Bosso to Dr Sartori six years ago. Her niece, Sandra Hoffman, says Pia was told the treatment would destroy the cancerous tumours in her thyroid. That this was going to be cure?

SANDRA: “Cure.” They were the words that she used. They were the words other people told me as well. That this treatment has helped other people. That they’ve seen it with their own eyes.

LIZ HAYES: 53-year-old Sandra McCarty was also promised the treatment would combat her breast cancer. Her husband Gerard and daughters Natalie and Renae were encouraged by the apparent evidence that Dr Sartori offered.

NATALIE: When we looked into this program, it clearly showed that there was this cutting-edge treatment available through a leading international cancer specialist. So it seemed legitimate to have a crack.

RENAE: We were virtually told this was a fantastic, miracle cure that the medical pharmaceutical companies didn’t want you to know about because it would put them out of business.

GERARD: We were told that it wasn’t authorised and that we would have to be very quiet about it.

LIZ HAYES: You were not to let on.

GERARD: No, no.

LIZ HAYES: The concoction of chemicals as I understand that treated the Australian patients, were made up of ingredients that are not legally able to be obtained in Australia. Where did –

HELLFRIED: No, no. They are legally obtained in Australia…

LIZ HAYES: These are paint strippers, solvents, these are –

HELLFRIED: Yeah, yeah. Sure, they can use it for that too. But every veterinarian and every athlete in the United States uses them.

LIZ HAYES: But you’re not supposed to use it in humans.

HELLFRIED: Yeah, “every athlete” – athletes are not humans for you?

LIZ HAYES: Sandra McCarty and Pia Bosso were among a group of patients, who in 2005, made a pilgrimage to Perth for the cesium treatment. They expected a hospital-standard clinic supervised by an Australian doctor and nurses. What did you walk in to?

NATALIE: It was just a home. Basically it was a living room with IVs and buckets to catch vomit and a few portable toilets that we then would need to…

LIZ HAYES: This was no clinic?

NATALIE: No. No.

LIZ HAYES: Within a fortnight, Sandra and Pia were dead. They were among four patients to die at the house over four consecutive days – a fifth died just over a month later.

LIZ HAYES: When did you decide this was not going to be a good outcome?

GERARD: I think probably the second last day, I thought things had gone too far and then the treatment the last day was very, very hard for Sandra.

NATALIE: I could tell that she was really trying hard to accept the horrible things that were happening to her body. And she said, “Nat, they’re killing me, they’re killing me, Nat.”

LIZ HAYES: It’s hard to believe that what went on inside this house could happen in the 21st century. Cancer sufferers were subjected to what was nothing short of torture. They were plied with dangerous chemicals that caused severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Some would be so sick that they would slip into unconsciousness. In the end, as one nurse who worked here told the coroner, the treatment room resembled a war zone. Innocent, vulnerable, trusting people it seems, were treated as little more than human guinea pigs.

NAT: It was a house full of very, very sick people. A lot of moaning, a lot of crying. It was just horrible.

LIZ HAYES: The treatment was overseen by two nurses – one of them, Simone Phasey, who was unregistered in Western Australia. But Dr Sartori was nowhere to be seen. Unbeknown to his patients, he was banned from entering Australia. He’s also been jailed three times – twice in America and once in Thailand – in relation to his treatments. Do you tell every patient, “I have been jailed for incompetence and I am unlicensed” – do you tell them that?

HELLFRIED: Absolutely, absolutely. There isn’t a patient that doesn’t know that.

LIZ HAYES: Dr Sartori told me that absolutely every patient knew of his criminal history.

GERARD: Not one little bit did we know.

LIZ HAYES: You lied about your criminal history to try and get licensed in Australia. Honesty isn’t one of your big assets, is it?

HELLFRIED: As I said, I’ve made many mistakes.

LIZ HAYES: In the absence of Dr Sartori, the patients placed their faith in Perth GP Dr Alexandra Boyd, who owned and lived in the house where they were treated. How often would you see the patients?

ALEXANDRA: I think I saw most of them at least two or three times during the time of the treatment.

LIZ HAYES: You didn’t see them daily at all?

ALEXANDRA: No. But they knew that knew that right from the beginning that I wouldn’t be seeing them daily, Liz.

LIZ HAYES: I don’t know whether they did?

ALEXANDRA: Yes they did, they were well aware that I had a very busy schedule and that I would not be overseeing the treatment.

LIZ HAYES: Dr Boyd was participating in this treatment?

GERARD: Oh, no doubt participated and was participating and knew she was going to be participating all along.

LIZ HAYES: It would be hard for her to argue that she didn’t really know what was going on.

GERARD: I would’ve thought, I would’ve thought, yes.

HELLFRIED: Yeah, naturally she knew what was happening. I mean they were, she knew naturally that they were treated with cesium.

LIZ HAYES: Dr Boyd’s name is on indemnity documents signed by some patients. She was paid more than $38,000, yet this experienced doctor claims she left the care of these very ill patients to Dr Sartori’s unregistered nurse, Simone Phasey.

LIZ HAYES: You had no idea of the compounds, the chemicals that were being intravenously fed into the patients?

ALEXANDRA: No.

LIZ HAYES: Did you not say to any of these nurses, “what the hell is going on?

What is in this stuff?”

ALEXANDRA: No, because Simone told me she had done this over several years with Dr Sartori and knew exactly what was going to happen.

LIZ HAYES: You were in a position to say “enough” because it couldn’t be done without you.

ALEXANDRA: No, that’s not true. They still would have continued on, whether I was there or not.

LIZ HAYES: But it was happening in your house. The day before she died, Sandra McCarty was taken to Freemantle Hospital but even then, Dr Sartori’s people concealed the truth about what had been going on.

NATALIE: Simone Phasey who was the nurse, she introduced herself as ‘Simone Watson,’ my mum’s private nurse from Victoria and she told me to say “if they ask who the doctor is, don’t say Dr Sartori.” She asked me to call him ‘Dr. Contrarous’ or someone from Mexico.

LIZ HAYES: She was asking you to lie?

NATALIE: They were jumping ship, they were jumping ship.

SANDRA: And they took them to different hospitals over Perth so that presumably they wouldn’t be found out. So their intentions, their responsibilities, it’s questionable, highly questionable. The ridiculousness is that they still continued treatment when my aunty and others after people had died. So they still continued and they weren’t told.

LIZ HAYES: At no stage when you were getting messages, when you were talking to your nurses who were treating these patients in Perth did you think to yourself, ‘I’m killing them, I need to stop’?

HELLFRIED: Oh no, absolutely not. Nausea, diarrhoea, sometimes also vomiting – this is uncomfortable without any doubt, but it’s not a serious side effect and as soon as it’s over it’s over, there’s nothing remaining in the body.

LIZ HAYES: Do you believe these patients suffered unnecessarily because of this treatment?

ALEXANDRA: Looking back, they most probably did.

LIZ HAYES: Do you believe the treatment may have contributed to the deaths of some of these patients?

ALEXANDRA: No. I think – when I look back at what these patients had I think – in most cases it was just the cancers that killed them.

LIZ HAYES: All of them suddenly died within days of each other from their cancer?

SANDRA: It’s quite possible.

LIZ HAYES: Are you serious?

SANDRA: Yes.

LIZ HAYES: Australian authorities believe they know of 25 patients who received Dr Sartori’s treatment. Twenty four have died and the 25th still has cancer. Dr Sartori is now back in Austria and still peddling his wares on the internet. Dr. Sartori, can you not see that you’re out of step with everybody else and you think everybody else is wrong and you’re right?

HELLFRIED: No, no, it has nothing to do with me.

LIZ HAYES: It’s like a delusional person speaking. I guess I don’t get why you don’t understand why other doctors just think you are crackers. They do. For the families, it’s been a harrowing journey. They’re still dealing with the pain of losing someone they loved too soon and anger – knowing that none of this should have happened.

RENAE: For a personal perspective, I have a lot of guilt because I wasn’t in Perth and I didn’t get to say goodbye. So I never got to tell her I love her again. I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive myself for that.

NATALIE: She was a gorgeous, private, dignified lady and for her death to be such a circus, it’s disloyal to her memory.

LIZ HAYES: She was robbed of that dignity, wasn’t she?

NATALIE: Just, yeah….

LIZ HAYES: That’s what should never have happened.

GERARD: That’s right, yeah. That’s been the hard part, really, really hard.

SANDRA: These are strong people I think that wanted to live and were prepared to endure a lot of pain. That no one’s standing up and saying that there was anything wrong with the treatment, it’s just extremely sad and I think someone needs to be made accountable.
