Joav Merrick was born in 1950 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Medical degree (MD) and Master
of Medical Science (MMedSci) in 1977 and later Pediatric specialist from the University of
Copenhagen and degree in medical science (DMSc).
Resident and Attending Physician at various Pediatric Departments in the Copenhagen
region and later positions as Director of the Section for Ambulatory, Community and
Psycho-Social Pediatrics, Director of the Prospective Pediatric Research Unit, University
Hospital, Copenhagen and Director of the Child Protection Team at one of the
Municipalities in the Copenhagen County.
Initiator and Director of the Children’s House, National Hot-line, National Center for
Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, Copenhagen. Initiator of the establishment for a
Danish Ombudsman and initiator of the biannual Scandinavian Congresses on Child Abuse
and Neglect since 1983.
Clinical Professor in Child Health and Community Pediatrics at the University of
Copenhagen, visiting Professor at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago and the C. Henry
Kempe National Center for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect , Denver, USA,
Visiting Professor at the Nordic School of Public Health, Gottenburg, Sweden and
Honorary Professor at the Australian Institute for Coordinated Research, State of Victoria.
Today affiliated with Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Division of Pediatrics,
Community Health and School of Continuing Medical Education.
Numerous published articles, chapters in books, educational material, radio- and television
programs on child health, human development, disability, rehabilitation, health, welfare,
abuse, advocacy, quality of life and prevention.
Several books like “Children and the Emergency Room”, “Incest”, “Child Abuse”, “Child
Sexual Abuse”, “Children in Alcohol- and Drug-abusing families”, Children at risk”,
“Childhood” and “Child Development”, “Suicidal behavior in adolescence”. Also
textbooks, such as “The Scandinavian Textbook on Social and Community Pediatrics”,
“The Scandinavian Textbook on Child Abuse and Neglect” and “Principles of Holistic
Medicine”.
Thesis on “Child Abuse and Neglect in Denmark. Epidemiological, clinical and Social
Pediatric aspects”.
Received the Peter Sabroe Child Award for outstanding work on behalf of Danish Children
in 1985 and the International LEGO-Prize (“The Children’s Nobel Prize”) for an
extraordinary contribution towards improvement in child welfare and well-being in 1987.
Member and boardmember in several Danish, Scandinavian, Israeli and International
organizations and societies. Executive Council of the International Society for Prevention
of Child Abuse and Neglect 1984-96. Chairman of the Finance Committee, 1986-88 and
Chairman of the Journal Committee from 1994-96. On the Editorial Board of the
“International Journal on Child Abuse and Neglect” from 1984-94, but continues to perform
referee work. From 1999 Editorial Board of the International Journal of Religion, Disability
and Health published by Haworth Press, New York. From 1999 review work for the Israel
Medical Asssociation Journal (English Journal) and from 2000 Editor-in-Chief of the
International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health published by Freund Publishing

Internet Journal of Pediatrics and Neonatology (Internet Scientific Publications, Ispub.com)
and the International Nursing Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disability (internet
journal launched in 2004 by the Developmental Disabilities Nurses Association, Blaine,
Washington). From 2003 the Principal Editor of the “Child Health and Human
Development” domain of the on-line Scientific World Journal published by Scientific
World Ltd operating from Newbury, UK and New York and in 2006 the Principal Editor of
TSWJ-Holistic Health and Medicine published by Scientific World Ltd.
Immigrated to Israel in 1989 to take up the position of Attending Physician at the
Department of Pediatrics and Director of the Child Protection Team, Chaim Sheba Medical
Center, Tel-Hashomer.
Also work as Community Pediatrician in Newe Monoson, Kupat Holim Clalit and later as
Community Pediatrician in several settlements for Kupat Holim Leumit and Kupat Holim
Makabi.
Since 1991 appointed the Medical Director of the Division for Mental Retardation (DMR)
in Israel under the Ministry of Social Affairs responsible for the medical care of over 8,000
persons with intellectual disability in more than 60 residential care centers and 60
community related residential care facilities (hostels, protected apartments). The DMR
today provides services to 25,000 persons with intellectual disability.
From 1999 the initiator and also the director of the National Institute of Child Health and
Human Development, an academic virtual research institute on children, the disabled and
the intellectually disabled in Israel affiliated with the Office of the Medical Director,
Ministry of Social Affairs, Jerusalem, Israel.

Board of Directors, Hospital for Sick Children, Fuglebakken,
University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Elected as the representative
of the medical staff. The Board was responsible for all administra-
tive, budgetary and teaching tasks of running a 150 bed Children’s
Hospital for the Municipality of Copenhagen.
Research Pediatrician and later Director of the Section for Prospec-
tive Pediatric Research at the Department of Pediatrics at Rigshos-
pitalet, University of Copenhagen. The major database at the Unit
was established in 1959-61 consisting of a birth cohort of 9,006
pregnant women (The Copenhagen Perinatal Cohort), who delivered
8,820 live born infants and 362 stillborn or late abortions. Research
teams from Denmark and the USA have followed ,and still continue
to do so, the children resulting in numerous dissertations, articles
and research work supported by Danish, International and American
bodies (such as NIH) and Foundations.
Initiator and President of the first Scandinavian Congress on Child
Abuse and Neglect bringing for the first time more than 300 profes-
sionals from Scandinavia together to exchange scientific experience
in a new field of research. The three day meeting resulted in the
establishment of a Scandinavian Society for the Prevention of Child
Abuse and Neglect and a planning group responsible for the Scandi-
navian Congress on Child Abuse taking place every second year.
Director of the Section of Ambulatory, Community and Psychosocial
Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics at the University Hospital,
Copenhagen. The Section had a multidisciplinary team responsible
for more than 5,000 consultations per year.
Initiator to the establishment of a Child Protection Team at the
Municipality of Ishoj in Copenhagen County with a population of
35,000 people. The multidisciplinary team was responsible for the
assessment and treatment of all cases of child abuse, neglect and
psychosocial problems in families coming into contact with the
Health and Welfare Department of the Municipality.
Elected and reelected in 1990 by the membership (more than 2,000
professionals from 100 countries) of the International Society for
Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) to the Executive
Council. Over the years served as Chairman for the Finance
Committee (1986-88), member of different Commitees (Member-
ship, Nominating etc) (1988-94) and Chairman of the Journal

Committee (1994-96). Also served as member of Organizing or
Scientific Committee every second year for the International
Congresses drawing between 1-4,000 professionals together for
scientific exchange in the field of child abuse.
1985-88:
President of the Danish Child Development Foundation. Expanding
the scope and contribution of the Foundation work for the benefit of
Danish children. At the same time establishing a firm economic base
for the continuation of the Foundation in the future.
President of the Danish Child Health and Welfare Organization after
being asked to take over and revive this old established, but defunct
organization. After a total reorganization and major fundraising
activities it has today become the major child advocacy organization
in Denmark with a membership of over 4,000 people, a National
Center for Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect, a
National Children Hotline, a National Informationcenter on Child
Health and Welfare and instrumental in the ban of physical punish-
ment of children by their parents by law of the Danish Parliament the
establishment of the Danish child Ombudscouncil under the auspices
of the Danish Parliament. From 1988 Honorary President and life
time member.
Attending Physician and Director of the Child Protection Team,
Chaim Sheba Medical Center establishing a multidisciplinary team at
the Center and professional contact with all other Pediatric Depart-
ments in Israel on the issue of child abuse.

1991-present: Medical Director of the Division for Mental Retardation in Israel
responsible for the medical care of over 6,000 persons with
mental retardation or intellectual disability in close to 60 residential
centers in Israel and over 2,000 persons in community related
programs. In each of the centers there is a medical clinic with
medical- and para-medical staff and twelve dental clinics.
1999-present: Initiator and director of the Naional Institute of Child Health and
Human Developemnt, a virtual academic research and clinical
institute on children, the disabled and the intellectually disabled in
Israel affiliated with the Office of the Medical Director, Ministry of
Social Affairs, Jerusalem and the Faculty of Health Sciences, Ben
Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva.
