In the next few weeks or so, you will begin to see some movement of dirt across from the rec center. This will be the site of our new Town Hall as well as a five acre park with such amenities as a splash pad, ice rink/roller skate path, Amphitheater and more. This will be a wonderful place for our community to gather. Completion is slated for June of 2017.

On Monday I attended a legislative policy meeting at the Capitol. One of the bills being discussed involves the use of body cameras by police. A lot of discussion has occurred between legislatures and law enforcement to come up with a bill that will satisfy both parties. At the forefront of this discussion is the need to protect the rights of those being filmed in their homes as well as providing a level of assistance to law enforcement seeking to perform their duties.

I attended a caucus meeting at the Capitol today. There is a lot of discussion among legislators regarding the need for additional education funding. It appears this need stems from a lack of new teachers and important programs that have been eliminated or postponed due to a lack of funding. In some instances, funding is being taken from other programs like transportation and roads to make up the difference. I believe the time has come to address this issue and if necessary raise taxes to meet the needs of a growing state. Otherwise, important programs such as transporation and roads are going to be ransacked.

As you know, the legislative session is in full swing at the Capitol. Some of the bills under consideration is the use of body cameras by law enforcement and the distribution of video which in some instances can be sensitive in nature particularly if a police officer enters a home. The other bill being discussed is to allow the distribuiton and use of medical marijuana to patients who may benefit from such treatment. I would like to know how you feel about these bills being proposed as well as any other legislation being considered. During the session I will be at the Capitol frequently and can convey your thoughts and concerns.

During this Christmas season which provides special moments to be with family and friends, may I express my sincere love and appreciation to all of the residents of Herriman. Amid the joy that comes from the laughter of little children and the festive lights and decorations, may we pause and remember Him whose birth we celebrate. A tiny babe wrapped in swaddling clothes brought hope and light into the world. May that light bring warmth and comfort to each of you during this festive season.

You may have noticed a number of signs voicing opposition to the Herriman Hills Initiative. Although I am supportive and respectful to political signs proclaiming their position, I must say that these signs are extremely misleading. The $7 charged to each household is not a tax it is a fee to preserve our mountains and create a wonderful and unique recreational property. There are many arguments on both sides of this issue, but it really comes down to this point. If you want housing and commercial development on the South Mountain then vote "no" on the initiative. If you want to preserve this beautiful and pristine region which is part of our history and develop it for recreational use then vote "yes." It's really that simple. I'm voting "yes" to keep this exceptional resource available for public use.

As mayor, one of the choice privileges I have is the opportunity to perform marriages. This is truly a wonderful occasion to serve our community and to provide this amenity to our residents. Unfortunately, the requests to preform this service has been very demanding and at times taken me away from family and the other important duties I preform as mayor such as promoting economic development in our city which is critical to the long-term financial stability of our community. With this understanding, I have made the decision as mayor to discontinue performing marriages. Although this decision was extremely difficult, I believe it is in the best interest of our residents and community that I assume this position.

During this season in which we celebrate the birth of our nation, I wish to offer my personal gratitude to our founding fathers who drafted under divine influence the document know as our Constitution. This sacred manuscript is the foundation to the freedoms we enjoy. Abraham Lincoln spoke of the consequences of altering or interfering with it's content. He said, "Don't interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties.” Let us never forget the importance of this document and the price spent to defend it.

I attended the County Council meeting Tuesday to advocate for putting the transportation funding bill on the ballot this November. This initiative will raise the sales tax 1/4 percent to provide needed funding for roads, biking lanes, trails and transit. I am a strong proponent in allowing the people to vote and decide on this tax increase.

Today is National Day of Prayer. It is a time to appreciate and recognize the power of prayer. Whatever our circumstances, whatever our religious affiliation, I hope that we will make prayer and integral part of our lives. As we witness the suffering of the poor and forgotten, the infirmed, those who have lost loved ones and the atrocities throughout the world, today we need this divine influence as never before.

I attended a meeting with a number of mayors today. Part of the meeting discussed our current water status. Richard Bay of the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District raised concerns about the lack of precipitation this year. He reported that in our region our snowpack level is only 34%. Mr. Bay indicated that there would be no water restrictions this year. However, he emphasized the need to raise public awareness of the need to conserve our water usage. Let's each of us do our part to conserve this precious resource.

I attended the transportation rally at the Capitol on Wednesday. Cities and towns are seeking additional funding to maintain our roads. Although this would require a minor increase in our sales tax I believe this is a smart investment in our roadways. Deferring putting a dollar in our roads today could cost us ten dollars in five years. Although an increase in sales tax is painful, it makes common sense economically to invest in our roads.

This last week I attended the Jordan School District Board meeting. One of the discussion items was to consider Herriman Elementary and Butterfield Canyon Elementary running on a traditional calendar for the next two years. With the expected growth, these two schools would then revert to a year round schedule after the two year window. I would be interested to know how you feel about this proposal. Personally, there are benefits but I also have concerns on how it may impact children. The Board will be making a decision at their next meeting and it would be helpful to convey your thoughts and feelings about this issue.

Jennifer Townsend Meek The survey sent to parents said they would evaluate the needs of the school in two years to see if it needed to go back to a year round schedule. Not a guaranteed thing that it would only be traditional for 2 years. I hope parents completed the survey and I hope we are traditional for more than two years.

I attended a special meeting with Salt Lake County mayors regarding transportation funding. This is going to be a hot item at this years legislative session since it will involve possibly raising the sales tax by a .25%. This additional funding is very important to the city inasmuch as we have a number of roads that need ongoing maintenance. I ask your support on this important issue. If we don't receive this additional funding, we will be forced to use general fund monies reserved for other projects in our community. If you are supportive of this additional tax, please convey your desires to your legislator.

I attended a meeting with the Governor today at the Capitol. We discussed the urgent need to fund transportation. An investment in transportation is an investment in our economy. If we wish to be in a position to encourage businesses coming to our city and this state we will need to have a strong transportation infrastructure. I invite everyone to support our legislatures in this cause. It will require a tax increase either in sales tax or fuel tax but we desperately need additional funding to pay for the maintenance of our roads. The city has been paying for road maintenance primarily from our general fund which is normally used for other city projects. I would love to hear from you on this issue.

I attended the Jordan School District Advisory Board charged with looking at creative ways to reduce the cost of our school buildings. As we have met, it is apparent to me that we can save money in the construction of our schools. This is an important process as we contemplate the number of schools that we will need to build in the future. It is my hope that we can save the taxpayers money and still maintain the safety and curriculum standard for the children.

Why is there not more zeroscaping done in schools? Would it save $ on watering, yes. Would it teach our children by example to be good stewards of our resources? Yes!

I also visited a number of other governmental agencies discussing issues from funding to buy property bordering Camp Williams to provide a fire buffer, secondary water and economic growth. The meetings were very productive and should pay dividends in the foreseeable future.

I attended a joint meeting of the mayors, school board members and state legislators to discuss the potential split within the Jordan School District. Overall, the meeting went well. There is still work to be done, but my feeling is optimistic that a resolution can be made. It was the overwhelming consensus of those who participated to avoid going through another split which only hurts our kids. Please let me know if you have an opinion on this issue.

I am presently working with the mayors regarding the potential Jordan District split. I am encouraged by the feeling among the city leadership to try and keep the district together. Each feels that the interest of our children is best served by avoiding the split. This Monday the mayors of the various cities within the district will be meeting in closed and open session with the school board in an effort to resolve some of the issues that have brought us to this present situation.

I attended a cancer awareness event in Bluffdale called "Relay for Life" on Friday evening. Those participating in this cause were to walk from 7:00 p.m. on Friday to 7:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Bluffdale Park. The idea behind the walk was to illustrate that cancer never sleeps and that the need for more research to stop this dreaded disease is needed. I want to thank Travis for her dedicated and thoughtful work in putting this worthwhile event together.

On Saturday I attended a yard sale to raise money for Isaac Garcia. He is a resident of Herriman and attends Herriman Elementary. He suffers from a rare form of juvenile macular degeneration. Based on the progress of this disease, he will be legally blind by age 15. The money being raised will allow him to visit some national parks and attend a Broncos game before he loses his sight. Our thoughts and prayers go to him and his family.

We require all approved solicitors to wear a badge created by Herriman City. A copy of the badge is shown below. Solicitors are required to follow a set of guidelines set forth by the city. Carmen Freeman As Herriman continues to grow it will eventually require a new city hall. In that process, we should be sensitive on how we spend taxpayer money in the construction of such a building. Thanks Fred for your input on this important issue.

Carmen Freeman As Herriman continues to grow a new city hall will be needed. However, depending on how the bond turns out I am not certain as to the timetable on such a project. I would certainly be sensitive to the taxpayers investing in such a project. If elected as mayor, numerous discussions and cottage meetings would be employed to determine the most appropriate action to take.

I want to express my deep appreciation to everyone that responded so willingly to the flood emergency on Saturday. As my wife and I registered the numerous volunteers, we were deeply touched by the dedication and commitment of these wonderful heroes who came seeking an opportunity to help those affected by the flooding. I am also appreciative of our police, fire and city officials who responded so quickly to this emergency. Through their valiant and heroic efforts, property damage was kept to a minimum.

As a community, we are truly blessed to live in Herriman and be surrounded by wonderful and dedicated people who respond to the call of duty.

Paul Pehrson This is why I love living in Herriman City. What a wonderful dialog we have with the city, the council members, etc. Thanks Coralee Wessman-Moser. You are a wonderful asset to the city and the city council. I had no idea that an unwarranted light could not only create accidents, but also increase the city's liability. That is good information.

Paul Pehrson Lindsey, that's for that insight. I can see how a light would reduce your control and ability to adapt to the number of students that are there at any given time. I appreciate your perspective! Sounds like a challenging issue either way.

At the Herriman City Council meeting on Thursday, I took the opportunity during citizen comments to encourage the council to consider how rapid growth can affect our children. With all of the new development planned for Herriman, it will need to be managed in such a way as to ensure we have adequate schools to handle the increased student enrollment. If we don’t, unmanaged growth will increase the number of students in the classroom and certainly affect student learning. I hope each of us will take the opportunity to express our concerns about growth and its effect on our greatest and most important resource – our children.

I attended the planning commission meeting Thursday night. At that meeting a new development called “Anthem” was discussed. This project is a very large development encompassing much of the area around Herriman High School. With this development and others that will come to Herriman, I am concerned about how this type of growth will impact our public school system. I am planning to discuss this concern at our next city council meeting. My experience serving on the school board has helped me to appreciate the lengthy process in building schools and the effective of high enrollment in the classroom.

Recently, I had the opportunity to go on a Trek activity with some of our wonderful youth. We walked, pulled and pushed handcarts some 28 miles along dusty and sometimes muddy roads and trails seeking to learn about our pioneer ancestry and to appreciate the challenges they experienced in coming to the Salt Lake Valley in such humbling circumstances. To the youth who participated, I have the greatest love and admiration for their faith and fortitude in accomplishing this noteworthy goal. Each of them are truly pioneers in our day as they go forward with faith and show others the way to follow.

Last week we had the opportunity to pay tribute to our pioneer ancestry, I wish to express my love and appreciation for each of them and the sacrifices they made. Through their faith and determination we are the beneficiaries of this beautiful area we are privileged to call home. One of those pioneers was my great grandfather William Freeman, who walked across the dusty plains and then with a handful of other pioneers came to this part of the valley to help establish Herriman. To each of these pioneers we honor today, I will be forever grateful for what they have done to bless and strengthen my life. ‪#‎pioneerday‬

This is a wonderful time of the year as we celebrate the birth of this great country. Amid the parades, picnics and fireworks, it is a time to ponder and express appreciation for the countless number who have sacrificed time, resources, personal interests and in some cases their very lives in defending the freedoms we enjoy. For each of these noble patriots, the words from America the Beautiful sings praises to their name: "Oh, beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life!"

I love America and am grateful for God's merciful hand in blessing us with such great heroes. ‪#‎independenceday‬ ‪#‎4thofjuly‬

I attended the planning commission meeting last night. The commission heard from residents regarding the new subdivision planned near High Country Estates. Concerns were raised regarding the fence that would separate High Country Estates with the new development. Proposal was made by commission to do a galvanized fence so it does not restrict the view of the properties. Proposal was sent to City Council for approval. By and large the residents affected by this change seemed pleased regarding the proposal.
