Seit drei Jahren gibt es in den USA einen Streit zwischen der Behörde und einer kleinen Milchfarm: Die Farm verkauft entrahmte Milch ("skim milk") und die Behörde behauptet, diese entrahmte Milch sei ein Imitat.

State: Skim milk with no added vitamins is 'imitation'

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The Ocheesee Creamery in the Florida Panhandle produces all-natural skim milk from grass-fed cows with absolutely nothing added, yet the state says they have to call it "imitation."
And while they argue about it, the dairy is dumping hundreds of gallons of skim milk down the drain each week.
Creamery owners Paul and Mary Lou Wesselhoeft were in federal court Wednesday as part of their nearly three-year-old battle with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which argues that skim milk can't be sold as skim milk unless vitamins are added to it.
But that goes against the all-natural philosophy at the creamery located about 50 miles west of the state capital.
"Our customers want an all-natural product. If we call it imitation, they will not buy our product," Mary Lou Wesselhoeft said after the court hearing. "To me it's degrading and a slap in the face because it's pure, unadulterated skim milk."
Webster's dictionary defines skim milk as simply "milk from which cream has been removed," with no mention of added vitamins. But Department lawyer Ashley Davis told a judge consumers expect whole milk and skim milk to have the same nutritional value and that the Wesselhoefts' skim milk is nutritionally inferior because vitamins are removed when the milk fat is removed.
"Ocheessee's product is imitating — literally imitating — skim milk," Davis said.[*/quote*]

All-Natural Local Dairy Fighting State To Sell Low-Fat Milk

The Ocheesee Creamery makes and bottles all-natural milk at a dairy farm about an hour west of Tallahassee. Skim milk was a big seller for the small operation, but
skim milk production abruptly stopped, when state dairy regulators recently said Ocheesee can’t sell it without adding a synthetic vitamin.Listen

Things were running smoothly, until October of last year, when a new inspector showed up.
“She came up to check behind our regular inspector. And it was when she came that she told us we could no longer do skim milk,” Wesselhoeft said.
The inspector said, Ocheesee would have to start adding vitamin A to their skim milk. It’s a
U.S. Food and Drug Administration rule. Vitamin A occurs naturally in milk fat, so when you remove that, you have to put in a synthetic vitamin. But Wesselhoeft said, her customers wouldn’t buy it like that.
“By putting the vitamin A in the skim milk, for me personally, that’s downgrading the milk quality because it’s no longer all natural,” she said.Department of Agriculture Director of Food Safety, Tiffiani Onifade, said, she doesn't know why Ocheesee had been allowed to sell all-natural skim milk for years. But the department has to follow federal laws and state rules.
“All milk and milk products are treated the same way. All milk producers in Florida are treated the same way, so with respect to that, there aren’t exemptions,” she said.
