Revealed: Trump inauguration crowd photos were edited after he intervened

Exclusive: documents released to Guardian reveal government photographer cropped space ‘where crowd ended’

A combination of photos shows the crowds attending the inauguration ceremonies of Donald Trump, left, and Barack Obama.

A government photographer edited official pictures of Donald Trump’s inauguration to make the crowd appear bigger following a personal intervention from the president, according to newly released documents.

The photographer cropped out empty space “where the crowd ended” for a new set of pictures requested by Trump on the first morning of his presidency, after he was angered by images showing his audience was smaller than Barack Obama’s in 2009.

The detail was revealed in investigative reports released to the Guardian under the Freedom of Information Act by the inspector general of the US interior department. They shed new light on the first self-inflicted crisis of Trump’s presidency, when his White House falsely claimed he had attracted the biggest ever inauguration audience.

The records detail a scramble within the National Park Service (NPS) on 21 January 2017 after an early-morning phone call between Trump and the acting NPS director, Michael Reynolds. They also state that Sean Spicer, then White House press secretary, called NPS officials repeatedly that day in pursuit of the more flattering photographs.

The concerns about politicians rose to new high now: presidents are 'rated X'.

Of course we knew we are reigned by madmen. But, couldn't they, please, at least pretend to have some kind of acceptable manners?

Rename Fifth Avenue in front of TrumpTower: "President Barack H. Obama Avenue"

To be delivered to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, New York City Council

We request the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets be renamed "President Barack H. Obama Avenue." Any addresses on that stretch of Fifth Avenue should be changed accordingly.

350,481 signatures. NEW goal - We need 375,000!

MOST RECENT SIGNERS

Background

The City of Los Angeles recently honored former President Barack Obama by renaming a stretch of the 134 Freeway near Downtown L.A. in his honor.

We request the New York City Mayor and City Council do the same by renaming a block of Fifth Avenue after the former president whose many accomplishments include: saving our nation from the Great Recession; serving two completely scandal-free terms in office; and taking out Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind September 11th, which killed over 3,000 New Yorkers.

Let’s just be clear: (1) it’s not illegal; and (2) it’s literally the *opposite* of a “coup.”

BREAKING: Joe Biden wins Georgia, Donald Trump wins North Carolina
Mother Jones <newsletters@motherjones.com>
2020-11-13 16:25

Mother Jones Daily Newsletter
November 13, 2020

The final results of the presidential election have been called: President Trump won North Carolina, and President-elect Biden won Georgia, turning the state blue for the first time in 28 years.

The latest results, including Biden's win in Arizona, give him 306 Electoral College votes, 74 more than Trump's 232 and well over the 270 needed to win. Biden's popular-vote lead has grown to nearly 5.4 million, according to the Cook Political Report. (Georgia is currently undergoing an audit of its results, but election officials say it's unlikely to change the final outcome.)

Despite Biden's decisive victory in both measures of the vote, Trump has refused to concede the election. While his legal efforts to throw out votes have failed to gain traction, his refusal to include Biden in intelligence briefings—among other acts of denial of his defeat—has led many Americans to wonder whether a coup is imminent. (The answer, according to the very smart people my colleague Jacob Rosenberg asked, is no.)

Well, there you have it. Enjoy the weekend, and don't step on any cracks today.

SOME GOOD NEWS, FOR ONCE

Today Is World Kindness Day—and Friday the 13th

Looming disaster and peril get all the love on Friday the 13th, but there is a ton of justice, good fortune, and joy in the archives. It was Friday the 13th when Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins recorded “Friday the 13th" in 1953, a classic of collective resilience. Their day had an eerie start: Rollins was delayed by a car accident, and trumpeter Ray Copeland fell sick, so Julius Watkins filled in, but they measured the moment by their resolve and firepower. The 10-minute jam was written on the spot in the studio, and Rollins tells me it’s one of his most fulfilling collaborations. Full track here; Monk's solo here.

It was Friday the 13th when Evelyn Brier became the first woman to receive an airplane instructor’s license. And Friday the 13th when President Lyndon Johnson signed an executive order banning gender discrimination in federal employment, which, for all the rightful criticism of its enforcement and political support, signaled a milestone. But you’re not convinced. You freak about the 13th. You say you’re not superstitious while watching your step. Here’s more:

It was Friday the 13th when Super Mario Bros. entered the world, in 1985, and another Friday the 13th when Steve Buscemi entered the world, in 1957. What scare has Buscemi given you other than Fargo and Reservoir Dogs? Steve is fine. He was a New York City firefighter in the ’80s. The day after 9/11, he volunteered with his old firehouse to work 12-hour shifts digging through rubble in search of missing firefighters and other potential survivors. "Very few photographs and no interviews exist because he declined them. He wasn’t there for the publicity," a firefighter community wrote in solidarity. Ten years later, he joined protests against firehouse closures under Mayor Bloomberg. The actor has spoken at union rallies in support of labor rights while serving on the Friends of Firefighters advisory board.

The first dinosaur eggs were discovered on Friday the 13th. Guess which day it was when NASA announced water on the moon. Guess the date of this year's World Kindness Day. Correct. Share a word about kindness shown to you or by you at recharge@motherjones.com. And if today turns to crap, see you on Saturday the 14th.

In September, Donald Trump told far-right extremists to "stand back and stand by."

Today, they attempted a coup. Incited by Trump, right-wing insurrectionists stormed the Capitol building and disrupted Congress' process of certifying Joe Biden's Electoral College win.

My colleague Dan Spinelli has been keeping track of the developments here.

THE PROBLEM still persists: all the mess and fraudulent laws that were made by Donald Trump and his enablers. Don't forget: He is backed up by short of the half of the voters.

The USA is a religiot nazi country. It has this tradition for way over 200 years. It did not get better. It got worse.

Trump grants clemency to egregious healthcare fraudster
« Reply #90 on: January 12, 2021, 02:31:23 PM »

Donald Trump, the most shitty and criminal president ever of the United States of America pardoned
"the largest healthcare fraud scheme ever charged by the Department of Justice."

What will happen next? Will the fraudster get away or will the new presidency nix the fraud committed by Trump?

Trump grants clemency to egregious healthcare fraudster

President Donald Trump has commuted the sentence of Philip Esformes
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/statement-press-secretary-regarding-executive-grants-clemency-122220/
of Miami Beach, whose crimes involved $1.3 billion in fraudulent claims to Medicare and Medicaid for services at his network of nursing and assisted-living facilities in Florida.

Esformes was convicted in 2019 in what federal prosecutors termed

"the largest healthcare fraud scheme ever charged by the Department of Justice."
https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdfl/pr/south-florida-health-care-facility-owner-convicted-role-largest-health-care-fraud

He was sentenced to 20 years in prison on 20 felony counts. Esformes must still pay the amount left of the $5.5 million in restitution that was part of his sentence. In their pre-sentencing memorandum
https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/20437927/esformes-sentence-usg.pdf
, federal prosecutors described Esformes' conduct as "pernicious, premeditated, and part of a lifelong pattern of disrespect for the law. . . . This was not one criminal act, but hundreds of choices to break the law, even thousands, for more than a decade."
[Hiltzik M. He was convicted in a historic healthcare fraud. Trump is letting him walk free.

yahoo! news, Dec 29, 2020] A 2016 indictment
http://www.casewatch.net/doj/esformes/indictment.pdf
of Esformes, hospital administrator Odette Barcha, and physician assistant Arnaldo Carmouze, alleged:

*** Esformes’ network of facilities gave him access to thousands of Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.

*** Many of these beneficiaries did not qualify for skilled nursing home care or for placement in an assisted-living facility; however, Esformes and his co-conspirators nevertheless admitted them to Esformes Network facilities where the beneficiaries received medically unnecessary services that were billed to Medicare and Medicaid.

*** Esformes and his co-conspirators further enriched themselves by receiving kickbacks to steer these beneficiaries to other providers who performed medically unnecessary treatments that were billed to Medicare and Medicaid.

*** To hide them from law enforcement, kickbacks were often paid in cash, or were disguised as payments to charitable donations, payments for services, and sham lease payments.

*** Esformes and hospital administrator Odette Barcha were also charged with obstructing justice.

Court documents indicate that in 2006, Esformes paid $15.4 million to resolve a civil fraud case that involved unnecessarily admitting patients from his assisted-living facilities into a Miami-area hospital.

Breaking: The House just voted to impeach Trump—again

January 13, 2021

It's official. The House on Wednesday voted to impeach President Trump on the charge of "incitement of insurrection," making him the first and only president in US history to be impeached twice. Ten House Republicans, including Rep. Liz Cheney, the third-highest-ranking Republican, broke with the GOP to back the resolution.

So what happens next? Over in the Senate, a number of reports have emerged pointing to Mitch McConnell's potential support to convict the president. The Senate majority leader is "more likely than not to vote to convict Trump," sources tell Axios hours after the New York Times reported that McConnell is furious with Trump and believes that he has committed impeachable actions.

It's anybody's guess what McConnell ends up doing. But the current whispers certainly provide Senate Republicans cover if they choose to join Democrats in removing the president in the wake of last week's violent insurrection at the Capitol. Altogether, the scene stands in striking contrast to Trump's first impeachment trial just 13 months ago, when not a single House Republican voted to impeach.

13 Songs on the Brink of Impeachment: A Recharge Playlist

“Music is medicine,” the poetry professor, literary scholar, and music historian Andrea Benton Rushing used to tell me. Her words ring true. As the impeachment debate unfolds, volume up:

"Impeach the President," by the Honey Drippers, immortalized an uptempo funk beat so irresistible it's been sampled hundreds of times since 1973: "Behind the walls of the White House there’s a lot of things we don’t know about. Behind the walls of the White House there’s a lot of things we should know about…Impeach the president. Impeach the president. Impeach the president."

Immortal Technique, the Afro-Peruvian hip-hop musician, adapted the Honey Drippers' classic: "How many times I gotta state my position before y'all say, 'This lip service, he’s wishin’?’ I been organizing. I got a thousand petitions, been up before sunrise, writing. I’m on a mission."

"Impeach Me Baby," by Beverly “Guitar” Watkins, from 2010: "I've got to impeach you…The whole world is laughing because of how you done messed up on me. Yes you did."

“Dance for Impeachment,” by Taarka, is a 2004 ballad built on violin, mandolin, slapped drums, and bass that eases into a crescendo of conflict and resolution.

"Impeach," by Confab, is a rock riff recorded in Alabama for a 2017 album with another resonant song: "Reason Will Not Save Us."

“Impeachment With Honor,” by Joe Grease and the Dump Dubya Band, recorded (with honor!) in 2007: "What say our forefathers? If they were around, this White House would crash on down. A disgraceful Bush administration. Cheney seems to want world domination. The president's fate and Halliburton is on the tape—folks are wonderin’ who's running our nation…Many times I wonder about Bushie and the lies he's tellin’ me. With no congressional expense he wants a long Texas fence."

"Impeach," by Tom Chelston in 2007: "Well hello, George! The framers of our Constitution, fresh on the heels of revolution, must have seen the writing on the wall. They secured for us an open door in Article 2 Section 4 to commence a presidential overhaul. Now we've run this play a few times before. With thousands dying and Bush go lying—illegal torture, illegal spying...I-M-P-E-A-C-H.”

“Impeachment," by Dream Techno, is time-warp trance with effects-heavy loops glued loosely together by a pulsing beat from 2004.

"Impeach" by Zemog El Gallo Bueno is a 27-second interlude of post-salsa dissonance, commensurate with the headlines. "Each composition is a battleground," says Abraham Gomez-Delgado.

"Impeach God" by Dethklok is metal apocalypse set to an animated short: "I’m having my Cabinet schedule a debate. The world will be our witness, judged in eyes of hate."

Bonus tracks:
“Let’s Impeach the President,” by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young (live in 2008)

AOC: "I thought I was going to die."

It's been just eight days since the murderous attack on the Capitol. In
that short window, Donald Trump was impeached—again [3]. His most ardent
and shameless ally in the Senate, Lindsey Graham, has gone from abandoning
the president to running right back [4]. At least three Democrats have
tested positive [5] after sheltering in place [6] with maskless
Republicans.

All this is a lot to process—and my guess is that Republicans are eager
to move on from the violence their leader had a direct role in inciting.
But in that vein, I recommend, if you haven't done so already, watching
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez open up [7] about her deeply traumatic experience
in the Capitol riot, during which she reveals she "thought [she] was going
to die."

"We were very lucky that things happened within certain minutes that
allowed members to escape the House floor unharmed," the New York
congresswoman said in an Instagram Live video [8] late Tuesday. "But many
of us narrowly escaped death."

But the detail that has particularly stuck with me is Ocasio-Cortez's fear
that her own colleagues would willingly put her life in danger by
disclosing her location during the lockdown: "I didn't even feel safe
around other members of Congress. There were QAnon and white supremacist
sympathizers and, frankly, white supremacist members of Congress in that
extraction point who I know, and who I had felt would disclose my location,
who would create opportunities to allow me to be hurt, kidnapped, etc."

It's been two days since her Instagram broadcast—a lifetime these
days—but I'm still thinking about Ocasio-Cortez's story. Its terrifying
details should not be lost on anyone, no matter how much Republicans want
you to move on.

SOME GOOD NEWS, FOR ONCE

Yes, Something Entirely Unrelated to Insurrection, Impeachment, and
Imminent Harm [23]

One night at Joe's Shanghai in Manhattan's Chinatown in the late 1990s, my
friend suggested we order a tofu dish to round out the pork and greens
items we had chosen. No fan of the soybean product, I went along, figuring
I'd pick at the tofu and focus on the _good_ stuff.

But mapo tofu emerged as the clear star of the table, and we ended up
fighting over the last morsels: silky curd suffused with a dark, fiery,
umami-bomb sauce, accented by beef and punctuated by a prickly,
tongue-numbing spice that turned out to be Sichuan peppercorns. Okay, so it
wasn't vegetarian. But that night, I finally _got_ tofu, and mapo tofu
became a favorite during my time in New York. Lesson learned: The many
culinary traditions throughout regions of Asia, where tofu originated two
millennia ago [24], have everything to teach eaters like me about a
delicacy I'd unjustly questioned.

I was reminded of tofu's exquisite potential during my recent interview
with J. Kenji López-Alt. He's a giant in the food world: chef-restaurateur
(Wursthall [25] in San Mateo, California), author (of the celebrated _Food
Lab_ [26] cookbook), and food-science expert (chief culinary consultant for
_Serious Eats_). In our conversation, captured in a recent episode of
_Bite_ [27], he dropped definitive and comforting science on staying
virus-free while eating during the pandemic—and delivered an insider's
view of what it means to reopen restaurants even as the pandemic lingers
and COVID-19 testing lags.

At the end of our conversation [28], when I asked about his go-to comfort
food, López-Alt didn't hesitate: "Mapo tofu is my favorite food in the
world. We always have tofu at home. Like, a lot of it." He added that he
loved the classic version of the dish from its place of origin, Sichuan,
China (where it was apparently invented by a Mrs. Chen [29] in a small
eatery in 1862), but that when he was a kid, his mom would make a
Japanese-inflected version with leftover beef dumpling filling, tweaked
with sake and mirin in place of Sichuan condiments. (He said he had never
written out a recipe for Japanese-style mapo tofu, but he promised me he'd
make it soon on his YouTube channel [30].)

Just his mention of mapo tofu transported me to that long-lost moment in
lower Manhattan—and launched a craving that could only be satiated one
way during lockdown. I was thrilled to find on _Serious Eats_ a recipe [31]
by López-Alt for "Real-Deal Mapo Tofu." With his permission, I've pasted
it below. First, a few notes on a novice's experience with this dish:

• By far the most complicated part of this simple and elegant recipe is
assembling the ingredients. At an excellent pan-Asian market near me, I
found the fermented and umami-packed chili-bean paste called doubanjiang
[32]; the all-important Sichuan peppercorns, sold under the evocative name
dried prickly ash; the Chinese cooking wine, Xiaoxing; and dark soy sauce.
For the meat, I used ground pork because that's what I had but it really is
just an accent in the dish, and López-Alt also offers a vegan version
[33], replacing meat with mushrooms. Confession: I left out the chili oil,
instead adding a lashing of crushed chili flakes to ramp up the heat. On
_Serious Eats_, López-Alt notes "you can make your own by toasting a cup
of whole hot dried Chinese peppers in a wok until lightly charred, then
adding 1 1/2 cups of vegetable or canola oil. Heat the oil until the chilis
start to bubble slightly, then allow to cool and transfer to a sealable
container." I will do so, soon.

• Too often, US cooks slice tofu thin and roast it to the leather stage,
hoping that it will mimic meat. Here, tofu is allowed to be what it is: a
delicate, quivering curd that releases the flavor of its sauce as it melts
in your mouth. I regret every bad thing I've ever said about tofu. Note
well: "Use tofu labeled 'silken' in a hardness range of medium to firm,"
López-Alt warns. "Don't try this with the super-soft stuff or it'll fall
apart!"

• Mapo tofu exemplifies the importance of what the French call mise en
place, the craft of getting everything together before you execute the
dish. This recipe is dead simple and fast once you've got the peppercorns
toasted, oil infused, tofu par-boiled, condiments and corn starch mixed,
garlic and ginger grated, scallions sliced. Enjoy!

Real-Deal Mapo Tofu Recipe

By J. Kenji López-Alt

Reprinted from _Serious Eats_ [34] with permission of the author

     * 2 tablespoons Sichuan peppercorns [35], divided
     * 1/4 cup vegetable oil
     * 1 teaspoon cornstarch
     * 2 teaspoons cold water
     * 1 1/2 pounds medium to firm silken tofu, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
     * 1/4 pound ground beef
     * 3 garlic cloves grated on a microplane grater
     * 1 tablespoon fresh ginger grated on a microplane grater
     * 2 tablespoons fermented chili bean paste (doubanjiang [36])
     * 2 tablespoons Xiaoxing wine
     * 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
     * 1/4 cup low-sodium chicken stock
     * 1/4 cup roasted chili oil (see note)
     * 1/4 cup finely sliced scallion greens

_Directions_
1. Heat half of Sichuan peppercorns in a large wok over high heat until
lightly smoking. Transfer to a mortar and pestle. Pound until finely ground
and set aside.

2. Add remaining Sichuan peppercorns and vegetable oil to wok. Heat over
medium high heat until lightly sizzling, about 1 1/2 minutes. Pick up
peppercorns with a wire mesh skimmer and discard, leaving oil in pan.

3. Combine corn starch and cold water in a small bowl and mix with a fork
until homogeneous. Bring a medium saucepan of water to a boil over high
heat and add tofu. Cook for 1 minute. Drain in a colander, being careful
not to break up the tofu.

4. Heat oil in wok over high heat until smoking. Add beef and cook,
stirring constantly for 1 minute. Add garlic and ginger and cook until
fragrant, about 15 seconds. Add chili-bean paste, wine, soy sauce, and
chicken stock and bring to a boil. Pour in corn starch mixture and cook for
30 seconds until thickened. Add tofu and carefully fold in, being careful
not to break it up too much. Stir in chili oil and half of scallions and
simmer for 30 seconds longer. Transfer immediately to a serving bowl and
sprinkle with remaining scallions and toasted ground Sichuan pepper. Serve
immediately with white rice.

Another very funny Trump joke (from a couple of years ago, but still apt!)
MOVING TO FRONT FROM APRIL 4--UPDATED

After Donald Trump became US President he went on a fact-finding visit to Israel. While he was on a tour of Jerusalem he suffered a heart attack and died.

The undertaker told the American diplomats who were accompanying him, 'You can have him shipped home for $50,000, or you can bury him here in the Holy Land, for just $100.'

The American diplomats went into a corner and discussed this for a several minutes. They came back to the undertaker and told him they wanted the president shipped home.
The undertaker was puzzled and asked, 'Why would you spend $50,000  to ship him home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here, in the Holy Land, and you would spend only $100?'

The American diplomats replied, 'A long time ago a man died here, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead. We just can't take that risk.'

UPDATE:  Reader Felix Sadelli points out to me that this joke is clearly a variation on one told about Stalin in the old Soviet Union (you can find a version of it in Russia Dies Laughing: Jokes from Soviet Russia. Here's one version of it:

Stalin was dead. The Soviet people resolved to get rid of the dictator by burying his body as far as possible. They formed a special committee to have this arranged.

It wrote to the British asking if Stalin could be buried there. "Well," replied the British, "we already have Karl Marx here. It would not be fitting to have two communist figures in the same nation."

It then turned to the Germans. "We suppose," replied the Germans, "but as you know, there is already Hitler here. Two authoritarian figures in the same nation would not be proper."

As the committee pondered where to ask next, a telegram came from Tel Aviv. "Since Stalin never objected to the formation of Israel, we agree to have him buried here."

The committee felt relieved, but suddenly a few members started to panic and shrieked. "No way! No way! In Israel, they believe in the resurrection of the dead!"

Mr. Sadelli kindly shared some others; just a couple which were especially funny:

A man ran along the streets of Moscow yelling, "Khrushchev is a pig!"

He was arrested, tried, and sentenced to 21 years in prison. One year for the insult, and 20 years for "divulging state secret."

==========

Brezhnev and Napoleon met in the afterlife.

"Had you been our commander in the last world war instead of Stalin, Hitler's army would surely have not been able to cross into the Soviet Union," said Brezhnev to Napoleon.

"And had I had a newspaper like Pravda," said Napoleon, "my defeat at Waterloo would never have been found out."

‘QAnon Shaman’ gets more than three years in jail for role in Capitol riot

The accused Capitol rioter dubbed the QAnon Shaman is sporting a new look — sans horns — in this newly released mugshot.

The notorious shaman, whose real name is Jacob Chansley, is virtually unrecognizable without the furry headdress, horns and face paint in the jailhouse photo released by officials in Alexandria, Va.

Mugshots of federal inmates are difficult to obtain, according to Law and Crime, which published the photo.
