The Generalitat has once again sanctioned the well-known pseudoscientific divulger, Josep Pàmies, for promoting MMS (Miracle Mineral Solution), an illegal compound in Spain to which the farmer attributes curative properties against autism, Ebola or malari[/TEX-ENTRA]a. This time, the sanction amounts to 600,000 euros for advertising the MMS during a conference. The fine is added to two others imposed against Pàmies for the same reason. In total, the sanctions amount to 720,000 euros.

It was the most awaited resolution and the one that was the most important in economic terms (600,000 euros). The last fine applied by the Department of Health against Pàmies responds to the resolution of the disciplinary proceedings initiated by the Generalitat a few weeks ago on the basis of a controversial pseudo-scientific congress on autism. In the act, the MMS was presented as one of the curative treatments for this neurodevelopmental disorder.

A few weeks before the scheduled date of the pseudoscientific congress and after being alerted by associations of professionals and relatives of people with autism (a disorder that currently has no cure), the Department of Health urged Pàmies not to promote this compound in the act under any circumstances. A few days before the conference, the farmer assured that he was going to suspend it, but in the end, he ended up celebrating the event, talking about the alleged bonanzas of the MMS for autism and even retransmitting the whole event through their social networks.

The Generalitat has imposed on Pàmies itself, as the organiser of the event, a sanction of 600,000 euros for "promoting, advertising and informing the public about products with medicinal purposes that are not authorised as medicines". The MMS is a solution of sodium chlorite and citric acid, which was banned by the Ministry of Health due to its potentially serious adverse effects.

In addition to this last sanction, which is the largest, the Generalitat opened this year another two informative files that culminated in sanctions for promoting pseudoscientific treatments with therapeutic purposes for various diseases. Pàmies and its surroundings also promoted it through the website of their association, Dulce Revolución.

The first fine was 30,000 euros for "the promotion and advertising of various herbal products presented with indications for different types of diseases such as cancers and leukaemias". The Generalitat confirmed last week that the association "recognized" the facts and accepted the "voluntary" payment of the fine, which implied a reduction of the sanction to 18,000 euros. Pàmies explained that the fine was paid with donations from the members of Dulce Revolución.

The second sanction, of 90,000 euros, was for advertising the MMS on the entity's website for curative purposes. In the Internet portal were collected alleged personal cases where this compound had taken effect to cure numerous ailments. Pàmies said last week that, unlike the first sanction, this one would be appealed.

In his social networks, Pàmies explained, through his lawyer, Luis de Miguel Ortega, that the fine of 600,000 euros "is nothing more than an act of threat, coercion and illegitimate censorship before which the pertinent jurisdictional actions will be promoted in defence of the fundamental rights committed, such as the right of the population to exchange information and knowledge by any means, and to have the autonomy of will respected in health self-care".

The organizers of a pseudoscientific congress on autism have bullied the warnings of the Generalitat and, finally, have held the controversial event in which they claimed to cure this neurodevelopmental disease with an illegal drug in Spain. Despite the fact that at first they gave in to the warnings of the Department of Health and announced that they would cancel it, the promoters of this event have held the conference this Sunday and have even broadcast it on social networks. Health has opened a disciplinary case for promoting a drug banned in Spain.

The Generalitat had opened an informative file to the organizers of the event after complaints from professional associations and families of people with autism. The conference, organized by the farmer Josep Pàmies, one of the most active speakers in the world of pseudosciences, was scheduled for this Sunday in Balaguer (Lleida) and maintained the thesis that autism is curable (to date, there is no scientific evidence of this): according to its promoters, this was possible with a solution of sodium chlorite and citric acid (MMS, Miracle Mineral Solution), a product banned by the Ministry of Health since 2010 for its potentially serious adverse effects. In fact, MMS is as good for a broken as it is for a broken one, according to Pàmies: the farmer has assured that this compound serves as much to cure autism as Ebola or malaria.

The Department of Health warned them of the risks and crimes they could incur by promoting a drug banned in Spain. "The fact that an act is carried out in which the use of a product that presents risks for the health and that has been typified as an illegal medicine leads to consider that it supposes an imminent and extraordinary risk for the health if the people that attend decide to give the sodium chlorite to relatives that have autism", pointed out Health in its requirement to the organizers. The Generalitat can not prohibit these acts preventively because they are protected by the freedom of expression, but can warn if they are advertising or promoting drugs prohibited in Spain because these irregularities are included in the rules of advertising medicines.

The organizers of the congress responded to the requirements of the Generalitat by announcing that they were suspending the event. Pàmies himself assured EL PAÍS a week ago that it would be cancelled. However, the conference has finally been held. On his Facebook page, Pàmies has appealed to his right to freedom of expression to carry on with the controversial act and has even dared to broadcast it on his Facebook wall.

The Generalitat has responded to this with the opening of a sanctioning file for promoting the MMS. "Today the organisers have ignored the warnings and for this reason a file has been opened. There is scientific evidence that this product is harmful to health if ingested," said sources in the Department.

With this new sanctioning file there are already two fronts open to the organizers of this pseudoscientific congress. The Generalitat had already opened another dossier for similar reasons: to promote the MMS on their website. "We will not allow the promotion of products that are illegal and have no scientific basis. We will act with forcefulness and we will fight deceitfulness about health", said the Councillor for Health, Alba Vergès, through Twitter.

The Generalitat of Catalonia has fined 120,000 euros to the association Dulce Revolución, founded by the well-known pseudoscientific divulger Josep Pàmies, for promoting several products, some of them illegal in Spain, as remedies to cure cancer. The Department of Health had opened several disciplinary proceedings against the organization for publicizing these treatments that lack scientific evidence and, after the investigations carried out by the health officials of the Generalitat, the investigation has concluded with two fines of 90,000 and 30,000 euros respectively.

As confirmed by EL PAÍS Health, the sanction of 30,000 euros corresponds to a file opened during this year for "the promotion and advertising of various herbal products that were presented with indications for different types of diseases such as cancers and leukemias. The Generalitat has confirmed that in September the association sent a document in which it "acknowledged" the facts sanctioned by the Generalitat and accepted the "voluntary" payment of the fine. The prompt payment of the sanction implied a bonus for the entity that, finally, paid 18,000 euros.

The second fine, 90,000 euros, corresponds to the disciplinary proceedings initiated by Health a few weeks ago under the promotion on the website of the association MMS, an illegal drug in Spain since 2010. This compound (MMS, Miracle Mineral Solution) is a solution of sodium chlorite and citric acid and was banned by the Ministry of Health due to its potentially serious adverse effects. According to Pàmies, MMS would serve to cure autism, Ebola and malaria.

The farmer has confirmed to this newspaper that they will appeal this last fine. "We are cut off from freedom of expression. These products, even if they are illegal, we have to talk about them because they are beneficial", he concluded. Pàmies has clarified that the sanctions are not against him, but against Dulce Revolución, the organisation he helped found but does not direct - "I am a militant partner", he adds. The controversial speaker of pseudo-scientific therapies has justified, however, that if Dulce Revolución recognised the first fine of 30,000 euros it was because, in fact, they did not comply with the regulations on purpose, but with a motive for claiming. "It was a criticism of the law on the labelling of plants, where one cannot say what they are used for. Our idea was to provoke in order to debate", he said. The man has assured that this fine had to be paid with donations from the members.

The association is still pending the resolution of a third sanctioning file for also promoting the MMS in the context of a pseudoscientific congress held in Balaguer (Lleida), where it was announced that this component served to cure autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder that currently lacks a cure. Pàmies announced that, after the requirements of the Generalitat, which urged him not to promote the MMS, he was going to cancel the meeting but, finally, he celebrated it, spoke of the alleged bonanzas of this illegal medicine and even broadcasted his lecture on social networks.

The Attorney General's Office is promoting the largest investigation carried out in Spain to date against famous healers and pseudo-scientists for promoting and selling sodium chlorite on the Internet -a type of diluted bleach- as if it were a miraculous medicine capable of treating diseases as serious as each other and different from each other, such as AIDS, malaria, multiple sclerosis and cancer, among others.

Josep Pàmies and Andreas Kalcker, two of the best-known pseudotherapeutic gurus in Spain, are among those investigated for a crime against public health, as THE COUNTRY may have known. The note made public today by the Public Prosecutor's Office describes as "plot against public health" those investigated. Pàmies says he "has no record" of the ongoing investigation. "I receive so many notifications that I no longer pay attention to them," he said. This newspaper has not yet been able to locate Kalcker, of German origin but resident in Spain.

The investigation has its origin in a complaint filed last October by the Ministry of Health, which warned of the "publication and sale" through the Internet of sodium chlorite, also known as MMS by the initials in English of miraculous mineral solution.

The complaint recalled that the ministry had already ordered in 2010 the withdrawal of the MMS as an "illegal medicine" that entailed serious health risks. The risk is twofold. On the one hand, "there is evidence" that the mere fact of taking what is actually a type of bleach, even in very low doses, "can be harmful to health," according to Health. On the other hand, people who consume it instead of taking a legal drug incur the serious danger of not treating their illness.

The Health Department alerted the Public Prosecutor's Office that there was a swarm of websites, blogs and videos on the Internet dedicated to promoting sodium chlorite as a miracle cure. All this material also referred to "conferences, books and other promotional materials" with the same objective of attributing "to this product very broad therapeutic and preventive properties," according to a Health report on which the ministry based its complaint.

Among the ailments to be treated with the MMS, in addition to those already mentioned, those investigated proposed autism, hepatitis, diabetes and arthritis. "The fact that a single product is proposed for the treatment of this variety of pathologies [...] already constitutes proof of the absence of scientific basis" of its use, rivet Health.

According to a statement made public today by the Attorney General's Office, it was the Central Unit of Computer Criminality, with the support of the Guardia Civil, which took over the case. The unit has already "agreed to send a copy [of the investigations] to the provincial prosecutor's offices of Lleida [the place of residence of Pàmies], Madrid, Castellón and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, so that they may open the appropriate proceedings and continue the practice of the evidence".

According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the ongoing investigations have verified "the effective advertising and intermediation activity through the network, in different media and forms, of the MMS product".

Last October, the Generalitat of Catalonia already fined Pàmies 600,000 euros for promoting several products, some of them illegal in Spain, as remedies to cure cancer.

The pressure exerted by the Official College of Physicians of Alicante (COMA) has managed to stop the act that had convened for this Friday in a hotel in the city the German researcher Andreas Ludwig Kalcker to promote a false medicine that attributes curative properties against all kinds of diseases, according to sources of the college.

The product is called MMS (acronym for Miracle Mineral Solution) and, as admitted on its website this guru of alternative therapies, "is nothing other than chlorine dioxide, one of the most used disinfectants for more than 100 years in human history without creating resistance. He maintains, however, that this substance has allowed "the recovery of more than 235 children with autism.

The doctors from Alicante warned of the danger of ingesting this substance and Kalcker's own postulates in the middle of this month. The professional association issued a statement where its president, María Isabel Moya, denounced that MMS "is nothing more than industrial bleach diluted to 28% and mixed with citric acid. It is, he said, a substance prohibited in Spain for human consumption and its supposed healing power is nothing more than a "fraudulent message.

This message is accompanied by a devastating criticism of conventional medicine and the pharmaceutical industry that Kalcker (graduate in Economics and doctor in Biophysics in Alternative Health, according to his own curriculum) does not hide on his website. "Chlorine dioxide is not miraculous, it is simply a wonderful chemistry bringing oxygen to the system. If you don't know more, it's because the industry's interest is focused on making money by making symptomatic products that sell for life rather than curative products that give less money," he writes.

For the past two weeks, COMA has maintained an intense campaign to try to boycott the event that has finally borne fruit. He denounced it before the Ministry of Health of Valencia and even went to court, although its owner denied the prohibition of the act in a preventive way so as not to violate the right to freedom of expression of the speaker.

It has finally been the hotel itself, located on the beach of San Juan, which has canceled the act. "We are prudent to share this information. At the end of the day Andreas Kalcker, in desperation, could do it clandestinely," tweet this Thursday the professional college, while thanking the City of Alicante and the Ministry of Health for supporting his initiative and asked to follow "watchful eye" before the "hoaxes" medical.

The COMA insists that the MMS is not authorized by the Spanish Medicines Agency to be marketed as such, although it is presented "endowed with therapeutic and preventive properties of diseases of all kinds: infectious, tumor, degenerative. Its sale is only legal for industrial use.

Not in vain, its consumption can produce "adverse effects" such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, poisoning or kidney failure, lists the school, which feels the obligation to "alert the population to the talk to be held this Friday by a pseudoscientist. "In the last two weeks we have undertaken a courageous campaign in social networks by which we have been applauded and helped by the entire national scientific community and with which we have earned respect for not being afraid to denounce these abuses against public health," adds the medical college.

The Kalcker has been persecuted for a long time by controversy. He was already arrested by the Guardia Civil in October 2012 together with a Dutch couple for a supposed crime against public health, while he was giving another of his talks in Ibiza to promote and sell the MMS. In January of the same year, another medical school, the one in Barcelona (COMB), asked for the prohibition of the congress in which he was going to participate together with other lecturers under the title A world without cancer. What your doctor is not telling you.
