My 2 cents:

"After tightening the connection and then measuring the time it takes data to travel the length of the fiber, researchers found that the data arrive 60 nanoseconds earlier than assumed."

What the hell did they do? I guess that they made several mistakes. One being NOT to have checked all connections - and that in a very early state of checking the system after realizing that the timing is strange.

There is something "magical" there. A signal can not come in 60 nanoseconds earlier than assumed. The puzzling thing is: they talk about a "fiber", which means light. And light can not be "earlier".

But, there can be something quite different: Let's take a glass fibre cable. This has a length of about 60 foot, which is about 60 nanoseconds to get through for a signal at the speed of light. This could be a cable from a sensor tank (or whatever) to a computer input.

My guess is, that is NOT light, but electrons which speed through the WIRE. So, one possibility is that they did not use an electronic, but an optical cable - and messed up with the time delay for an impulse to pass through it.

Another possibility is much more devilish: Take a 2-wire cable AND NOT connect the inner wire to the connector. Then no current will flow. You will get a dirt effect. The signal is smeared. You can easily test such by taking a TV cable, pull the connector out of the socket, and then bring it near so it. You will see that a video signal gets through, despite no current flows. It is an electrostatic, a capacitive transportation. The capacity is very low. If a current would flow, it would take quite a time for the much higher current to get through. You would have the rise time of a signal impulse. The lesser the current, the steeper the rise.

So, either they messed up with the cables or they have such dirt effects. In either case, they should have checked for such in a very early state already.

Another point: Is all of this because of only ONE connection? They should have checked their circuit schematics and cabling schematics.


If the guy responsible for the mess is not one of the guys "at the top", I guess they will hang him out of the window....

That incident for sure will make a big mark in the log books of science. ;O)
